Understanding The Human Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

Your Body Has a Secret Balancing System — Meet the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)!

Ever wondered how your body manages stress, sleep, pain signals and so many other processes behind the scenes? Meet the endocannabinoid system (ECS) — one of the body's fascinating communication networks, and a big reason why scientists are so interested in CBD!

At CBD Healing Bar, we love exploring the connection between plant-based ingredients, skin health and the science behind cannabinoids. So let's break down what the ECS does, what ancient herbalists knew about cannabis, and what modern research is discovering.

Ancient wisdom meets modern science

Long before scientists discovered the ECS, cannabis was already being used in traditional medicine.

Historical records describe cannabis in traditional Chinese medicine thousands of years ago, and it has also featured in traditional Indian medicinal systems, including Ayurveda.

Of course, ancient herbalists didn't know about cannabinoid receptors or the molecular science we understand today. They observed plants, prepared remedies and recorded their experiences.

It makes you wonder: how many things people explored through traditional herbal medicine are only now being investigated properly by modern science?

We cannot assume every traditional use was effective, or that ancient practitioners understood the ECS. But their history of working with plants provides an interesting starting point for today's research.

Modern scientists later identified cannabinoid receptors and discovered that the body produces its own cannabinoid-like messengers. What was once explored through observation can now be investigated using laboratory science and clinical studies.

So what exactly is the ECS?

Think of your body as a busy town. Different parts need to communicate, respond to changes and keep things running smoothly. The ECS is one of the systems helping with that communication.

It has three main components:

  • Endocannabinoids: messenger molecules your body makes naturally.

  • Receptors: communication points that receive signals from these messengers.

  • Enzymes: help break down the messengers when they are no longer needed.

Two well-known messengers are anandamide and 2-AG. Two important receptors are CB1, found particularly in the brain and nervous system, and CB2, strongly associated with immune function.

Together with other biological systems, the ECS helps regulate processes involved in pain signalling, mood, appetite, memory and immune responses.

Scientists often use the word homeostasis to describe the body's ability to maintain relatively stable internal conditions. In everyday language, it's about keeping things within a workable range as your body responds to life's ups and downs.

The interesting part? Your body has an ECS whether or not you have ever used a cannabis-derived product!

Your skin has an ECS, too!

Now for the part we're particularly interested in at CBD Healing Bar: your skin!

Your skin isn't just a protective covering. It is an active organ, and researchers have identified components of the ECS in different skin cells.

Scientists are investigating how this signalling system may be involved in:

  • Maintaining the skin barrier.

  • Regulating sebum, the skin's natural oil.

  • Itching and sensory responses.

  • Inflammatory processes within the skin.

This is one reason CBD has attracted attention in skincare. However, discovering ECS-related components in the skin doesn't automatically mean that applying CBD will balance them or treat a skin condition.

The formulation, ingredients and concentration all matter, and more good-quality human studies are needed to establish which topical CBD products may offer meaningful benefits.

At the CBD Healing Bar we have conducted our own case studies on our own products made via our sister company: HIGHLY ENFUSED - Multi Award winning skincare & wellbeing brand!

CBD and THC: not quite the same thing!

Both CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) come from the cannabis plant, but they interact with the body differently.

THC can activate CB1 receptors in the brain and produce the intoxicating high associated with cannabis.

CBD does not produce that same typical high. Instead, it interacts with several biological targets, and researchers are still investigating how these interactions may affect different processes in the body.

You might also hear about full-spectrum CBD, which generally refers to an extract containing CBD alongside other naturally occurring cannabis compounds.

Some researchers investigate whether these compounds work together — an idea known as the entourage effect. However, it is still an area of research, and we cannot assume that full-spectrum CBD is always more effective than other formulations.

The takeaway? CBD is fascinating, but it's not a magic ingredient, and different products cannot all be expected to produce the same results.

What does the research actually say?

Let's look at three real examples of human research. These studies help show why CBD has attracted attention — and why it's important to understand the difference between promising findings and proven benefits.

Case study 1: CBD and severe epilepsy

Devinsky et al., 2017

Researchers studied 120 children and young adults with Dravet syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. Participants received either a purified oral CBD medicine or a placebo alongside their existing treatment.

The median monthly number of convulsive seizures fell from 12.4 to 5.9 in the CBD group, compared with a smaller reduction in the placebo group.

This was an important finding for a specific pharmaceutical CBD treatment. Some participants experienced side effects, and the results do not mean that every CBD oil or skincare product has the same effect.

Case study 2: CBD and anxiety

Bergamaschi et al., 2011

In a small study involving 24 people with social anxiety disorder, researchers examined responses to a simulated public-speaking test.

Those who received a single 600 mg oral dose of CBD showed lower anxiety-related scores than those who received a placebo.

Interesting? Absolutely. Conclusive proof that everyday CBD products treat anxiety? No. The study was small, used a single high dose and needs to be understood in that context.

Case study 3: CBD and skincare

Cosmetic dermatology review, 2024

Researchers reviewed the potential role of CBD in cosmetic dermatology, exploring why it has attracted interest for skin-related applications.

The research is interesting, but there is still a shortage of high-quality human studies establishing the benefits of specific topical CBD formulations.

In other words, promising early findings are a reason to keep researching — not a reason to promise that a CBD cream or facial will treat eczema, psoriasis, acne or other medical conditions.

What can we learn from these studies?

The evidence varies depending on the condition, product, dose and how it is used. There is strong clinical evidence for certain prescription CBD medicines in specific forms of severe epilepsy, while research into anxiety and CBD skincare is more limited. This is where we come in with our own case studies on humans and people we know who have tested all of our products for different skin conditions and ailments, it is safe to say so far so good ad we will be officially announcing our findings and results in the beginning of 2027.

Good science isn't about promising everything. It's about understanding what the evidence really tells us.

Final thoughts: an ancient plant, a fascinating system and science still unfolding

The ECS is an important part of human biology, helping cells communicate and contributing to processes throughout the body.

Traditional herbal medicine explored cannabis long before modern science could investigate cannabinoids at a molecular level. Today, researchers are building on our understanding of these compounds — discovering exciting possibilities while identifying where more evidence is needed.

At CBD Healing Bar, we love being part of this evolving conversation. Through our treatments and our sister brand Highly Enfused, we bring together plant-inspired products, modern techniques and a passion for helping people make informed choices.
